How to Have Mental Health Conversations with Friends and Family

Having conversations about mental health can difficult. Even if it’s with close friends and families. But these conversations are crucial and can be a great step towards healing. Here are a few ways to bring up mental health topics with your friends and family. 

Pick the Right Time & Place

Starting the conversation about mental health can be difficult. The place and time of that conversation can make a huge difference. If you want to discuss mental health with friends and family, pick a moment where everyone is relaxed and free of distractions. That allows for an impactful conversation with minimal interruptions. Avoid discussing sensitive topics during stressful times or when other individuals are busy. 

Be Honest 

An old saying goes, "Honesty is the best policy." When discussing your mental health or struggles, it is best to be honest and direct about what you're experiencing. When you reach out to your circle of friends and family, being open and vulnerable can make it easier for others to relate to you. 

Expect People to React

Starting the first conversation about your mental health can be scary, but you have to discuss it more than once. If you are engaging in a conversation with someone about mental health, it is important to follow up. A simple text message or phone call can reinforce that you care and will show continued support for their mental health growth.  

From stereotypes and stigmas to the fear of judged, there are many reasons people stay silent. However, engaging in these open and vulnerable conversations can foster an environment where people can open seek support for their mental health.
